My husband and I are expecting baby girl # 4 toward the end of this summer. While I've done this a few times already it has been a few years and some things have changed since my youngest was born. I thought that today I'd come on here and share with you a list of a few things I consider pregnancy staples. There may be things you think are overkill on this list or things you may be certain I forgot.

Our elderly relative that had been living with us had his condition progress to a place where living in a home environment was no longer safe or sustainable. He moved into an "apartment that has nurses on staff" and appears to be loving it. I cannot tell you how much of a relief it has been to know he is thriving there! Especially as there had been immense guilt and nervousness on our part about making the decision for him.
If you are in a similar situation I want you to know I don't think you'll regret moving them in with you unless they are mentally ill, violent, or a sexual predator (then please don't move them into your home) but if you can't or if you did and it's time for them to receive more care please don't feel guilty! You did what you could for them and you are still doing your best by moving them to a better location.
I've made a point to and will continue to be very generic when discussing his stay here as he has always been a very private person and wouldn't appreciate everyone knowing his business. As a result I will most likely not be discussing this again (on here) while he is living. We are thankful his stay with us ended with happy memories on our children's part and we are focusing on making positive memories as a family again (we were not able to participate in many fun and even normal things while he lived with us).Syd's Sensible Solutionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18343217732520198630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-600849240685742576.post-25330597347877699242017-11-16T14:25:00.002-07:002017-11-16T14:37:21.309-07:00One Pouring Cup Isn't Always Enough<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

I am a wife, mother of 3 (that I homeschool), owner of 3
furry pets who shed a lot, volunteer for my husband’s job, volunteer for my
church, and roughly 4 months ago became a caregiver to an elderly relative who
now lives with us. All in all I consider myself a rather strong and resilient
person who can handle a large amount of stress and responsibility. But
sometimes I, like many of you, overdo it several days in a row. Sometimes I think I can do entirely
more than I should. It’s not that I can’t handle it, I’m just going to pay a
large price for it later.

Our family moves a lot! Actually we've moved 9 times in 12 years and because of this we have a fairly strict 1 in 1 out policy when it comes to kitchen items and linens. My husband would most likely tell you this policy applies to the entire house but... I digress.
While it was unexpected it also somewhat wasn't as her health had been declining for some time. The kids and I were already back home when it happened but my husband was not. He put in for emergency leave and was on a flight out within about 14 hours. There have been a lot of changes in all of our lives in the past three weeks. I think one of the best things I was told the following day was conveyed to me by my grandmother as conveyed by her sister-in-law. That is you play the hand of cards you have. You can't look back to previous hands or hands you could have received. You can't change what is, even when you want to. You simply pickup and deal with what is.
We have been back home for a little over a week but had family staying with us last week and then I was diagnosed with bronchitis. This tends to happen about 50% of the time when my allergies get out of control or I get an upper respiratory infection; asthma is no joke people. Basically my lungs overreact (right now it's ragweed and wild fire smoke). I remember being a teenager and asking Dr. Tom "if I was going to outgrow this would we have seen signs by now" and being completely crushed when he said yes. At this point in my life it's just normal and that can be a bit of an issue. This past January I ignored it too long and ended up with walking pneumonia. I seriously thought I had a good grip on my asthma and not realizing how sick I was shook me. Needless to say I went to the doctor this time as soon as I realized it was starting to move into my chest and we were able to catch it early.

You know there are a lot of other things in life like this. Things we think we have under-control but they slip up on us. Things
While her age would make you assume we were expecting this (and we kind of were) I still wasn't logistically ready. I mean, with kids it takes me an entire day to get home from where we currently live. And to really amp things up we got a puppy a few months ago and he was added to my car full. So off I drove across several states with 3 kids and a puppy. Some people might call me crazy, I'm fine with that! Her funeral was just 3 days after her passing which gave me only 1.5 days to pack/get the house ready for me to leave and 1 day to drive. Here are a few of my tips for traveling in the car with younger children.
Most importantly I noticed a large decrease in my grocery budget for those weeks. I feel like I didn't make as big of a dent in my pantry as my husband probably would have liked but by the end we were all done! We actually caved with about 2 nights left and ordered Chinese food after I had spent hours reorganizing/cleaning the girls rooms before playing room switch-a-rooney. I was PCS (a military move) tired, was ordering Chinese food, and didn't care. Thankfully my husband is pretty supportive and I'm sure his love of Chinese food didn't hurt my cause.
I
am a few days late getting this on here but I picked up my groceries at
the beginning of my meal plan. I'm most likely going to need more
tomatoes before my Thursday trip and will either pick them up Monday or
have my husband get them on the way home from work. I also almost caved
and ordered Chinese food after our garage sale Saturday but pulled
it together and made a real pantry challenge dinner. The meal plan you see at the end is
the same meals as my original but was re-organized to accommodate our
crazy weekend (with the exception of the potato soup I simply removed). I chose to re-write it as I didn't think you'd want to see the arrows all over the original.
We are very blessed with a large pantry in this new house and my husband would tell you that I have taken advantage of it's space.
If you look around the blog you will notice that the planners are gone. What started as a desire to simply fill a missing part of the planner market shortly stopped being a missing part of the market. When Syd's Sensible Solutions decided to stop selling planners all things Syd's Sensible Solutions stopped. We have been through a lot of changes since you heard from me last. My husband is still in the Army but I gained a nephew, we moved, my husband went to school for a year, he was promoted, we bought a house/moved again, and shortly after arriving my husband was gone for work for several months. He's been back home for two months and I finally feel I'm at a place where I can come back to the blog. You can expect to see a variety of thoughts on homemaking, attempting to be frugal, meal prep/planning, homeschooling, Army wife life, PCSing (an Army move), Change of Command, and some Jesus drawing everything together. Stay and read if it blesses you and have a wonderful day if it doesn't!

Thanks!
Occasionally he will take leftovers but he really prefers sandwiches. Lunch meat can get expensive if you let it, especially if you prefer real meat and not the "puréed with fillers and poured in a mold" kind. However, there is one way I keep the cost down.
In the refrigerated section of the grocery store I have been able to find some hams that are a little smaller and boneless. They look like they've been cut. I take this ham to the deli and they slice it however I want for free. They attach the original barcode to my package and I pay the price of the ham before it was sliced. I bring the 4-5 pound package of ham home and separate it into the amount we will eat in 1 week. I seal it into freezer bags and label with the date. Dating each package is important because "hypothetically" a package could get buried in your freezer and you would want to know how old it is. Not that I've done that or anything (wink). You could also do this with a cooked boneless turkey breast but I haven't found any that I would call "real meat."

Two disclaimers: I have not noticed a change in the quality or texture of the ham doing this however we almost always eat all 4-5 pounds in one month. Also I have not encountered a deli that wouldn't do this but that doesn't mean you won't.

I hope this helps! Let me know what you do to save money on groceries.
Syd's Sensible Solutionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18343217732520198630noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-600849240685742576.post-78007316235881414392013-11-21T13:15:00.001-07:002013-11-21T13:17:01.669-07:00C-Section Packing List

Recently I had my 3rd c-section. Seeing as I had done this 2 other times one would think I had used everything I brought. While I had significantly pared down the items I brought I still brought a few too many things. Hopefully these lists will be a blessing to someone.
Thankfully my mother has been staying with us and has been cheerfully scrubbing our house and chasing our older girls as I heal from my c-section. As this was my third c-section I will be posting a more realistic c-section packing list later in the week. Everything will fit into a carry-on sized bag (except the boppy and the car seat). Hopefully it will help someone as they prepare for their baby's arrival.Syd's Sensible Solutionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18343217732520198630noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-600849240685742576.post-29779096308683197832013-10-19T06:56:00.001-06:002013-10-19T06:56:15.842-06:00When I Wake Up Early Hello blog world. I just wanted to take a few minutes this morning to encourage you to wake up earlier than normal on days you know will be extra busy. Let me be the first to say I do not do this all the time, I am after all hugely pregnant and would love to sleep many more hours a day than I already do, however when I do wake up early the benefits always outweigh the drawbacks!
I have one day each week that involves me being gone most of the day. If I don't get up early that day then we have a really hard time getting out the door, having what we need, and eating a real dinner. However, when I do get up early I accomplish more in less time than I dreamed possible.
I know there are seasons in our lives where this is virtually impossible, and I will personally be there in a few short weeks. Maybe you cannot realistically get up early everyday but there is one day each week that is difficult for you. Could you get up a little earlier just one day a week? Are there tasks you could complete the night before to give you a jump start on the day? Only you know the answers. I simply encourage you to think about what you could do to make your day go smoother.

Syd's Sensible Solutionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18343217732520198630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-600849240685742576.post-28016212878768730862013-10-01T12:38:00.000-06:002013-10-25T09:04:04.447-06:0010 Steps to a Less Stressful ChristmasI just wanted to remind everyone there are only 8 more Fridays until Christmas. It's not too late for you to have an organized, less-stressful Christmas; it simply takes planning. One cannot haphazardly prepare for Christmas and expect it to be anything but stressful. So here are my 10 steps to having a less-stressful Christmas.

1) Determine your Christmas itinerary (will you be staying home, traveling locally, staying with family/friends overnight). We also like to sync our calendars so we're on the same page.

2) Make a budget! What will you spend on gifts, food, holiday clothing, and gas/meals while traveling.

3) Make a list of people you would like to give a present to and set a budget for each person (based off your total gift budget you just set). Always plan for extra small gifts because there will be someone you would like to remember in a small way (a neighbor, a co-worker, a friend, the gymnastics teacher). Last year I found Christmas scented items at a popular soap store that were all under $4 each, some were only $1.

4) Begin planning gifts for the people on your list. Some people you will know what you want to give them in advance, other people you will have no idea (this is totally normal).

5) Plan your meal if you will be staying home. Keep in mind you don't want to be too overwhelmed. What can you make the day before? What can you make in a crockpot? What will other people be bringing? When is the best time to have your meal? - If you will be traveling make a list of the foods you will be taking to each house. Keep in mind they need to be foods that travel well and depending on how far you will travel may need to be foods you can easily purchase at the grocery store and assemble quickly (veggie tray, chips & dip, apples & caramel dip, cider & mulling spices, cheese & crackers, a bakery pie, or bakery bread).

6) If you will be staying somewhere overnight begin a packing list by category (bathroom, sleeping, Christmas outfits, everyday clothing, shoes...). I also determine what outfits we will be wearing on Christmas and purchase them according to my budget.

7) If I'm going to do a lot of baking I will make a list of what I want to make and what I need to purchase in order to make them. I will space them out on my calendar and begin with the freezable ones first.

8) Begin purchasing gifts. Normally I like to be mostly done before Thanksgiving however this year (for budget purposes) I will still be making some purchases in the first week of December.

9) Plan ways you can involve your family in serving and giving. Will you adopt a family? Will you be purchasing animals for a family via Heifer International or World Vision? Is there a shelter near you that could use a few hours of hands on help?

10) Lastly don't forget the reason for the season! I know it sounds awful to say but you need to plan this too. This is a very busy time of year and you don't want to get so busy with the things that don't actually matter to forget the the things that really do! Will you be doing an advent wreath? How else will you bring Christ into your family's Christmas?Syd's Sensible Solutionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18343217732520198630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-600849240685742576.post-41242986849392381792013-10-01T12:35:00.000-06:002013-10-05T18:36:39.606-06:00I'm Back - Updates
Where do I begin? Well, my husband and I are expecting our third child this month. She will be our third daughter. This pregnancy has been easier in some ways and harder in others. Just as every child is different every pregnancy is different. I would say the two hardest things have been that I have two smallish children who need my care and that my contractions start earlier with each child (this time they started at 17 weeks).
The homemade vanilla extract turned out great! Not only is it super easy but it also less expensive; I would recommend it to anyone! It's almost gone and I need to start a second batch. It would also make a wonderful homemade Christmas gift.
My husband relinquished his second company command this past Spring. We are definitely enjoying seeing him more often. He did a wonderful job and I know he was sad to leave his soldiers. He is now an instructor for the Army.
We moved. The upcoming addition to our family qualified us for a larger home and with the help of family and friends we jumped at the chance to say goodbye to the copperheads in our old backyard. We haven't moved to a different Army post, just a different house.
The weather is finally cooling off and it has me in a pumpkin mood. This isn't an update but more of a warning.
Lastly, if you're still here thank you! As one can imagine I was rather tired at the end of the day and instead of cleaning like we knew we should, we went to bed. Fast forward several days and I honestly thought I had cleaned everything up the following day but alas we had completely forgotten the juice box cooler. I think we each thought the other had taken care of it. What I found was not pretty but a little bit of bleach made a world of difference. Which brings me to the first...
Do not allow your juice boxes to sit in a cooler filled with melted ice (aka water). Juice box containers are made of cardboard. What ensues is mushy boxes, nasty water, straws wet with said nasty water, and an expensive mistake now in your trash can. You are welcome!
I very gratefully sat down with a sheet of paper and made two columns: What I Did Right and What I Need to Improve. I then broke the need to improves into 3 columns (to buy, to do, and to learn). It looked like this.
It doesn't matter if you stay home or if you work outside the home
we are all very busy! Sometimes I have been gone most of the day and get
home within an hour of dinner, sometimes I've had a sick kid and dinner
was the last thing on my mind, and other times I was the sick one and
my poor husband, mother, or sister was left to cook for my family. In
all these instances my meal time short cuts have proven invaluable! Yes
they do take some time upfront but the payoff is wonderful!
